Biography

Chris Carter

I was in my best friend’s basement when I was 10 or so. We were drumming on trash cans and canned yams with Lincoln Logs and singing “All The Gold In California” (don’t remember who did it). Anyway, Brooks turned to me and said, “You drum like a man.” Well, that was pretty much the start of music and the end of sports for me.

I discovered the Beatles in the late ’80’s, thereby rescuing me from the jaws of Whitney Houston and her ilk. They are EASILY the biggest influence on my song-writing. They single-handedly invented many of the sub-genres in rock, and their sense of melody/innovation is astounding (to me).

So my hair magically grew, I tried doing algebra homework while listening to speed metal (the metal won), I got a guitar, and I started trying to write songs. Most of these were derivative and/or laughable in retrospect, but I found that I LOVED creating music, and though that has not changed in 17 years, I hope my songs have. I still record on a 4-track at home - anything from pop songs to goofy shit to sci-fi soundtracky-type stuff. One of the hardest things for me is to try not to be self-conscious or too analytical when I’m creating/recording - it tends to kill my creative drive. There’s always time for analysis afterwards.

My absolute favorite era for music is 1966-1973 (the drug era). I think record companies were more accepting & tolerant of creative, different music and gave the green light to stuff that would never have made it out of a studio in the ’80’s. But really, there’s diamonds & dogshit from every decade…..

For me, the ultimate musical goal is access the beyond - to go out on a precipice, capture a piece of eternity, and bring it back to our dimension for Earth-people to marvel at, lifting them above the mundane, soul - crushing bullshit of everyday life. Basically, to be inspired and to inspire others. The least we can do is try, huh?
